Location of the Balä Beach Resort and History of the area.
Located on the Caribbean coast in the province of Colon, the Balä Beach Resort is just minutes away from some of the most interesting landmarks that you can find in all of Panama. Some of these attractions include the historic port town of Portobelo, the popular tropical getaway of Isla Grande, and the second largest free trade zone in the world, the Colon Free Trade Zone.
Sitting on the northern entrance to the Panama Canal only 48 miles north of Panama City, Colon City has a population of about 200,000 people and is the closest large city to the Balä Beach Resort. In Colon you will be able to meet all of your needs in terms of modern healthcare, shopping centers and service providers.
Founded in 1850 by Americans working on the Panama Railroad, Colon has gone through various cycles of economic boom. Multiple large scale development projects in Colon´s history including the Panama Railroad, the Panama Canal, modern shipping ports and the Colon Free Trade Zone all brought huge waves of jobs and growth. At the moment there are various new projects being planned and many already underway for both Colon City and the surrounding area.
Directly affecting the Balä Beach Resort is the construction of the brand new Panama - Colon Highway set to be finished by the end of 2008. This addition to the local infrastructure will greatly increase the speed and efficiency of land travel between Colon and Panama City alongside the Canal. Construction has already begun for the addition of a third set of locks to the Canal, allowing for larger boats carrying more cargo to pass from one ocean to the next. New construction for the improvement of current port facilities in Colon and the addition of new Royal Caribbean Cruise embarkations will also stimulate greater commercial flow into the area.
In addition to the aforementioned projects, new commercial and residential developments including the Balä Beach Resort will come together and translate into a new burst of investment and opportunity for Colon, finally with the diversity to stimulate sustained economic growth for the entire area.
